This particular document is related to incidents of property invasion (of the shōen of Inoue) being carried out by four kokujin status members of the Ishikawa gun, in which they had destroyed property, committed acts of arson, and had forced the peasantry to flee. The particular crime was deemed to be `very serious`, hence the Bakufu expected that the perpetrators would be punished. The land in question was being held as collateral by Mikami Echizen no Kami from a kokujin retainer of Kajūji, hence Mikami did not want the property to come under unwarranted scrutiny. The Bakufu thus orders that punishments been handed down. Although this particular document has no addressee, it is very possible that it was meant for Honganji, particularly as it included the phrase 同行, which was a Honganji expression. It was the practice of the Ashikaga bakufunate to issue documents in triplicate, the first going to a Shugo status recipient, the second to a Shugodai, and the third to the regional party or parties. |
